Maybe Sherlock and John are driving when they get in some sort of danger or emergency. Perhaps they are pursued by a villain. Sherlock gets injured or incapacitated in some way, and becomes unable to drive. John has to take the wheel. He attempts to drive by following Sherlock's instructions. His clumsy driving has Sherlock terrified.

Sherlock was selectively mute as a child. He barely spoke at all up until the age of 10. He slowly started to open up and speak more and more, but would have periods where he would go back to not speaking at all, at times of stress, when he felt threatened/upset/when he didn't understand the situation he is in.
These episodes got less and less as he got older and learned to cope better with these situations, up to the point where by the time he meets John it hardly ever happens. Still he did warn John when they first met that there might be times when he wouldn't speak.

Then something happens to trigger Sherlock going back to being completely mute. (Up to you how serious this something is. You could go down the very serious kidnap, non/con route, or the less serious; a situation where Sherlock thinks he is trapped/bout to die/he thinks JOHN is about to die, but they get out of it).

TLDR; Sherlock was selectively mute as a child. Something happens to make him regress, and he stops talking. (I'm really sorry this turned into a wall of text. I got carried away)
