I'm bored and your theories are boring. (Spoilers for TRF)

(Anonymous) 2012-01-22 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
Every time someone comes up with a new theory about how Sherlock faked it, I find myself rolling my eyes. Even the halfway plausible ones aren't doing it for me and I wish I could get as excited as everyone else is about picking the episode apart and figuring it out. But it seems like every time something new is suggested, I either simply don't like it for reasons I can't explain or I get irrationally angry because something has been grossly overlooked. I can't even bring myself to point out the errors, though, because I'm so bored with it.

I just want season three to get here so we can get the "how Sherlock faked his death" bullshit out of the way and focus more on how his death affected everyone and everything while he was gone. I think things like how John's coping, whether Mary will be around, the possibility that Lestrade was sacked, the possibility that Donovan was promoted to DI, whether or not there were hoards of Sherlock supporters or everyone turned their back on him, everyone's reactions to him returning, and the likely introduction of Moran are all far, far more interesting.

But maybe that's just me really liking character development and subplots. Sigh.

Trigger warnings

[identity profile] lysther.livejournal.com 2012-01-22 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
No, there aren't any trigger warnings in this post. It's just that I don't understand them. Seriously.. Are they there to warn people that stuff that might be considered to some people are in the post? Because that's what I use them for, for things like
mpreg and incest. If so, why not just call them "warnings", then?

Cry pardon if I give offense to anyone, I just want to know what these are.

Edit: WAIT I WAS SUPPOSED TO RANT IN THIS POST
Um, okay, fuck social anxiety and awkwardness and everything that makes my brain fucked up. I just want to go to the gym or the cafeteria without being so fucking terrified that everyone is staring at me and judging me.

Re: Trigger warnings

(Anonymous) 2012-01-22 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
(um, actual trigger warnings for this post, I think)

Trigger warnings are for people who have had traumatic experiences and discussions of topics linked to those experiences (such as sexual or physical assault, suicide, child abuse, phobias, discrimination, etc) may trigger panic attacks and/or flashbacks for them. I've seen them also used for mentions of addictions (such as drugs or self-harm) to protect recovering addicts who may find it more difficult resist whatever it is they're trying to quit when reading about it.

So, for example, while mpreg would just need a regular warning for people who don't like it, incest might sometimes need a trigger warning because a lot of real-life incest is non-consensual and reading about even consensual incest in the form of a kink could trigger traumatic memories for someone who had a bad past experience with it, and cause a panic attack. We just want to avoid that sort of thing, if possible.

Unsee

(Anonymous) 2012-01-22 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
I work from home. I start work at 4am so I wander downstairs and hear my father snoring in the front room.

I go to the kitchen, put the kettle on and prepare myself for the late shift.

I go to the front room to check on the father to see if he's alright, no passed out in a pool of his own vomit. He's lying on the floor in the foetal position, there are beer cans to his left and his console controller to his right.

On the screen is a chat room. He's been chatting to a woman. A woman who is not my mother they've been chatting about... well things we talk about on here really but more based in reality.

So I'm not sure how to feel. On the one hand, it's fair enough, he's a bloke, he's not doing anything particularly wrong and it's not like he wants anyone to know, I dont think he even knows I do, he was very drunk.

On the other hand I'm just overwhelmed by a slight disappointment. It's not something I should have seen but it made me so sad and I have no idea why.

I am considering taking a clinical trial, because I need money, obviously. It's safe. It won't leave side effects or something like that. I just need to go through a full body check-up and then I will be taking the tests for one or two days.

The problem is that I kind of feel bad about this. Do I really have to do this? Am I really that desperate? All I have to do is, just let them take blood samples a few times and then I will have enough money to pay off this month's rent, but It feels somewhat wrong... and strange.

But I really need the money.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-22 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
While in college, I sold my blood and cervical cells to AIDS vaccine research. I never felt bad about it or exploited (I have no qualms about letting a nurse rub my cervix with a q-tip), figured it was a field of research I support, and I got some money to spend on books and afternoons out from the deal.

It sounds like this study pays pretty well, and it's probably a more pleasant way to earn some extra cash than taking a shift at Wal-Mart. If you'd donate blood for free, what's the difference in getting some cash for it if it's going to research rather than blood bank?

What show were you watching?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-22 08:32 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I get the feeling people haven't actually watched the show.

Sherlock didn't live in Bakerstreet before he met John. John doesn't have any problems with hitting people for saying something negative. Sherlock going to Molly for assistance with lab work didn't come out of the blue. Lestrade and Mycroft know each other.

And there are so many more, simple things that are undeniably canon and still people get them wrong.

I believe

(Anonymous) 2012-01-22 08:45 am (UTC)(link)
I believe the thing Moffat is saying everyone has missed is something so obvious that everyone thinks it's not worth mentioning. Something like Sherlock being sad being an indication he's already got the plan underway then, or something equally obvious.

Or it's non-existent, and Moffat wants to frenzy the fandom by trolling and poking the theorists into exhaustion within the first month, which is stupid, since we need the energy to weather the Second Great Hiatus.

TL;DR Moffat, I adore you for Sherlock, but you're being a dick.

Re: I believe

(Anonymous) 2012-01-22 09:02 am (UTC)(link)
The answer will never be satisfying if people keep picking it apart like this. I'm going with "saved by kitty litter" until proven otherwise.

But Moffat wants to crow a bit about managing to pull that off (and not having it guessed in the first day). I can't dislike him for that.

The way no one anywhere I go to on the internet (this isn't levelled solely at here AT ALL) understands the concept of TEA. I mean at least in this fandom there's the excuse that maybe in certain circles in london society they do all take their tea weirdly cold or with lemons (though not with cream. This I am certain comes purely from a mis-interpretation of the phrase 'Cream Tea' which is TEA AND CREAMCAKE/SCONES).

A friend of mine once wrote a story in a writing group we were in and shocked us all by describing making tea in a teapot and ADDING MILK TO THE TEAPOT. It is not right. Sorry, but no and really it's such a MINOR point that if people don't UNDERSTAND TEA then they could just go 'and they had a cup of tea'. That's fine. It's when they specify 'Oh yes, Character A takes his tea with sugar and cream, Character B, who is working class, will surely have oolong or darjeeling. No. Character A will be normal (milk, no sugar thank you) and Character B will have PG Tips, Typhoo or Tetley if left to hir own devices.

There is also the complete misunderstanding from what George Orwell wrote about putting the milk in first. This is when using LOOSE TEA AND A TEAPOT. Putting milk on a teabag is not right.

And also the reason that people used to put the milk in first was due to materials used for cups- the hot tea would crack the cup. Later people would put the milk in first to stop the tea from staining the china.

I know it's minor but particularly in fandoms where people go into great detail and get it wrong it can be really, really, throwing to a story. It won't ruin the story, it just gives some very uncomfortable twinges.

Lol. Captcha!Mycroft says Mass, which is where I've got to go to now.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-22 09:23 am (UTC)(link)
Question:

I make tea like crap. I put milk in everything; I'll put it in certain herbals if no one's there to stop me. I dump approximately half a pot of sugar into everything I make. For convenience, I sometimes put my milk in my teapot so I can take my teapot upstairs without bothering about the milk bags. Plenty of people I know do the same.

Is this abnormal behaviour in England? Do most English people actually follow all the proper rules of etiquette? Not a rhetorical question, genuinely curious.

I don't get tumblr

(Anonymous) 2012-01-22 09:16 am (UTC)(link)
This isn't a rant about people on tumblr so much as... me just not understanding the appeal of it.

Whenever I follow a link to tumblr, it's just the fanart or whatever posting, and then beneath it is a long list of "so-and-so liked this" and "so-and-so reblogged this" with the very, very occasional actual comment (one-lined, anyway). Where is the fandom community sense in that? What I love about lj fandom is that, even in reply to a fanart or fanfic posting, you get comments saying what someone liked about it and sharing their own theories. Some of the best lj conversations spark from a comment to a fic or a random rant post. You can make a comment of "that's so my headcanon!" and spark a conversation unrelated to the original fic. Where is that interactive community with tumblr? Maybe I just haven't found the right tumblrs, but I haven't seen what I love about fandom over there.

Re: I don't get tumblr

(Anonymous) 2012-01-22 09:40 am (UTC)(link)
This!

I've also never quite understood the appeal of tumblr. Every time I head on over there, I just don't get the same sense of community that I do here, in terms of fandom.

I don't know. It seems like people don't really interact with each other. It's more...superficial? No, that's not the right word, but I'm not coming up with what is the appropriate one. Like, people have very limited interaction with each other. What's the word for that? God, I'm inarticulate tonight.

And just to be clear, I'm not trying to bash tumblr or any people who like it. I just don't quite understand it.

Since Reichenbach aired, I cannot sleep until I have watched John Watson grieving.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-22 09:50 am (UTC)(link)
Weeping for humanity's future. But then, mention of the Harry Potter fic My Immortal always bring that on.

I just found the tvtropes page for My Immortal, and I'm hoping the terrible spelling and use of the wrong words is supposed to be a reflection of the fic itself. Otherwise I'm weeping harder.

On the bright side, my weeping was temporarily tears of joy at the brilliance of reading "Snap and Loopin are pedophiles who enjoy masticating" I don't care if it's intentional or not, but I can't help but giggle at the thought of them chewing things really happily because they enjoy it so much.

If anyone else wants to lose faith in the future of humanity: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/FanFic/MyImmortal?from=Main.MyImmortal

(Anonymous) 2012-01-22 09:58 am (UTC)(link)
It's not unusual for TVtropes articles to reflect the subject. On the other hand, everyone who has read My Immortal and lives to tell the story might have acquired dyslexia along the way.

One of those ending masochists...

(Anonymous) 2012-01-22 11:15 am (UTC)(link)
I hate the feeling that comes with obsessively needing to finish something, it being awesome and then it being over. This feeling needs a name. I'm going to call it "ending masochism".

I had it with the first series--being unaware of British Brevity, in spite of the episodes basically being ninety minute films, I just could not get over That Cliffhanger. I was seriously like "Ooh, that was clever. Can't wait for next week's episode! I'll just go online to see when it's on... *cue year-and-half's suspense*

I'm having it now, facing the fact there won't be another Sherlock today.

I'm going to have it with The Dark Knight Rises and it will be unbearably annoying. I've waited for four years for this one. I know I'll like it. But the fact there's never going to be another Christopher Nolan Batman film, I just...can't, no, nope.

I think half the reason I'm in fandom is because I do not Get Over endings. I've dated the same person since I was 12. I still talk to the stepfather my mother divorced.I will read mountains of fics, if they deal with the aftermath of things.

I can get over something if it's terrible--I'm going to thoroughly enjoy Breaking Dawn: Part 2, probably sacrifice a few virgins when a certain internet meme crawls back to the shadows. But so many great things are coming out this year. If I can't be content with six amazing Sherlock episodes, I just know I'll be staring into some dark oblivion by the end of the year. I know it's a sign of a work's worth, that you miss it when it's over. But this is really starting to wear on me-- I don't want anything to end. It's gotten so bad, I finished a really good smutty, porny fill written months ago and almost cried because it was over. Porn. I cried because porn was over. The internet is FULL of porn but I cried because this one was over.

And I just can't stop myself. I know if I'm really this ridiculously sensitive about it, I can just avoid watching/reading finished stuff. But it seems like I'm taking it upon myself to finish things now. I bought the rest of two book series(es?) I started as a teenager and I'm reading them both now, knowing I will hate it that it's over. I so look forward to updates and sequels and reboots but I still know everything I ever like ever is going to end one day.

I know, I know, Sherlock doesn't really count because there will be a third season but this is the end of the stories I knew (not a Holmesian but I had the general idea about Scandal, Hound and Riechenbach), the end of the villain I had grown fond of, the end of fun!random!BAMF!Mycroft, the end of sarcastic put-on John...It just feels like a death to me. I knew I was sheltered but I had no idea it was this bad. I'm equating television series and fanfiction with death.

Grow up, self. Grow the fuck up.

I'm going with spelling.

It's not *all* porn, Louise

OK, maybe 98% of it... I'd like to say she's giving fandom a bad name, but, well...

So yeah. Louise Brealey (a.k.a Molly) knows about teh pawn:

"There's this whole world of fandom. What's fascinating is that they [the fans] write these stories about the characters. I initially thought they were just stories but they're not; they're basically porn.

After the first series, I was looking online to see what people thought of Molly and what came out was this story in which Molly got nipple piercings and had sex with Moriarty. At which point, I stopped reading."

...

Is it bad that I want to read that story now? ¬¬

Bahaha, not at all.

A fair bit is but not all of it is straight porn. Some of it has good plot around it. Some of it doesn't.

And yeah ... where is that fic?

(Mycroft thinks its an 'success')

Thank you for being yourself

I can't even begin to tell you how frightened I was that you would end up being another one of those sex-obsessed, angry boys I seem to keep dating. You didn't try anything, you were still the person I was friends with before you asked me out, you held my hand and walked me to the bus stop in the middle of the rain (and didn't mind the fact that I decided to be a cliché and made an mini-rendition of "Singing in the rain" halfway to the station).

Thank you, darling.

Has it really been only a week since s2 finished its airing? Only a week?

Well, holy shit. Seems like a much longer time, I've read and wrote so many prompts and fills that it seems like it's been a month since Reichenbach.

Rant: why do I often lose the concept of time like this (see example above)? It fucking worries me, when months feel like days and weeks feel like years. The fuck is wrong with me.
