Migration and Livejournal CAPTCHA issues discussion post

We're having widespread issues with CAPTCHA on LJ. I've turned it off, but it’s appearing automatically on all posts, even those with fewer than 5000 comments.

In the past, the mods have discussed the possibility of a move to Dreamwidth. Our plans were to wait until we needed to open a new post, then open that new prompting post on DW itself. The older posts would have been imported to DW for backup purposes, but frozen so that new comments could not be posted on them to DW. The old posts on LJ would have been left open so that people interested in filling prompts on them could continue to do so. New comments would have been periodically backed up to the DW posts. This would have left anyone searching the LJ meme for fic with as complete an archive as possible while permitting us the security of having a complete backup on DW.

How will a migration affect the current prompting and overflow posts?
We have had a Dreamwidth backup of the meme for some time. In the past, we have had issues updating comments on posts, and have lost some comments posted directly on DW (by ourselves; no fic was lost, only some testing comments that we made) when updating those posts with comments from LJ. The issues related to that have been solved, but because of concerns like that, I would feel most comfortable opening a new part entirely when we migrate. We could call the first new prompting post Part XXXVI version II and the new overflow post Overflow Post III. People who would prefer to fill on LJ (assuming anonymous commenting is ever fixed there) can feel free to continue to do so on LJ’s Overflow Post II and older prompting posts. Those who prefer using DW alone can use Overflow Post III and the new prompting posts.

How will a migration affect the fic archives? (Pinboard, Delicious)
The plan is to continue archiving fic with links directing to where they were posted on LJ. Fic on future overflow and prompting parts posted directly to DW will be archived with links to DW.

Our extended plans for the archive are to have a second version that contains only links to the DW entries of fics. This is a secondary concern for us because commenting would be frozen on the posts the older fics would be archived on, so new readers could not leave comments on the fics they’d read. Our plans for this archive were to look at the FPP page-by-page entries listing the fics on LJ, look at the appropriate spot on the page on DW, use the link to the fic on LJ to find it in the LJ delicious archive, and then manually copy the entry over onto the DW delicious archive with a DW link. At the moment we do not have enough archivists to work on this, but those are our ideal long-term plans.

I’ve opened this post on Dreamwidth with anonymous commenting enabled in order to hear your opinions and suggestions on this.

ETA:

Please tell me here or at the Page-A-Mod post if you've noticed anything I've missed.

They seem to have disabled that stupid captcha.

Apparently, it was too soon to celebrate. The captcha is enabled again, at least for me.

I don't mind if the community moves here, but I'm a bit worried not everyone will agree to move with it.
I think it would be necessary to at least post the links leading here on LJ, not just in the latest round, but everywhere where it will be visible for any visitor.

I almost started wondering if it was possible to move to AO3 instead since it has a similar comment structure and ability to post anonymously but then I realised that copying the whole kink_meme like it's possible to do here is impossible on AO3. Plus no flatview and e-mail notifications for comments... :-(

I'm in favor of moving, if only because Dreamwidth isn't pulling the "you can't remember the password you set when you were in eighth grade? Screw you; you can't get into your account" thing that LJ is.

I can't track prompts here, so I'm sorry, I won't be participating in the meme anymore if it's here. It's sad, because I've been on the LJ prompt meme since post #1. I can't get DW to track individual prompts though, and without that function, the meme is useless to me. Sorry.

na

That's not a bad idea actually. If you have a FAQ for the meme you should add that.

On the one hand, moving here is technically a brilliant idea, on the other hand, I'm a bit worried since all communities I know were pretty much abandoned some time after migrating or even sooner.

This is one of a very few places for me to stick to as a fan (pretty much everyone else is on tumblr, but I hate everything about that site with the force of a thousand suns).

Is there any way to advertise this kink meme somehow? I wish I could help with that but I don't have a blog, I'm not a fan of those, and I'm not a very popular author on ao3 to encourage my readers to come here. No doubt, I'm going to try, I just don't think it will be enough.

da

Maybe the mods here could check with the sherlockBBC lj group to see if they'd allow an announcement? the Meme did start off as a spin off from that comm after all.

As a way to advertise the kink meme from now on, I'd suggest to try to use more the kinkmeme tumblr account.

NA. And what's your problem with tumblr? If you wanted to help you would.

My problems with it are:

1. People who post there in general.
2. Content. Misinformation about pretty much everything, "facts" taken out of somebody's arse (Also, "Social Warriors", who won't admit that, for example, discrimination works both ways and things like that should be in every blog even if it's not what you come there for).
3. Mass stupidity from time to time (basically, counts as people, too).
4. Fandom wars you can't avoid even when you want to avoid them like black plague.

I used to visit the site sometimes a couple of years ago and often realised that I want nothing to do with it (long, ridiculous and pointless essays about why people "should" hate Mary or Irene ruin my fun in the fandom). I've been there recently (a month or so ago), only once, trying to find one particular fan art in various sherlockians' blogs. One of the first (and the last before closing the window) things I saw was a group of hateful, jealous fangirls, who spread idiotic, humiliating conspiracy theories and rant about Benedict Cumberbatch and his personal life, insult his new family and wish ill things to his wife and his baby.

AO3 has tags, and plenty of stuff you dislike can be avoided, kink memes have rules. Tumblr has nothing like that. Just lots of widely reposted and reblogged rubbish.
Maybe tumblr is good for advertising something (for example, asking the owner of a popular blog with many followers to make an announcement in their blog), but, sorry, I can't be a part of what I've listed above, which is just my personal opinion you may agree or disagree with.

There is no anon commenting on LJ anymore?

I always prefer LJ to my commenting and posting needs, but no anon is a deal-breaker as far as this meme goes.
