You're a right idiot aren't you? MOST OF THE WORLD CAN'T PLAY THAT FUCKING DVD. Jesus Christ.

Or can't get it.

Re: Very unpopular opinion

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Rubbish! A region free dvd player costs little more than a very cheap region specific one. I've had one to read US and European dvds for years. I've never needed to download illegally.

Pssst, hey, just FYI? Breaking region codes is illegal. Those "region free" players are so cheap because they're knockoffs not sold by up-and-up manufacturers who follow market rules.

No, region free players (and blu-ray players- blu-ray is region free) are legal in many countries. Major manufacturers including Panasonic and Sony make region free players.

Just like downloading is legal in some places but illegal in others. Some owners of region-free DVD players are still doing something that's illegal in some countries but legal in others.

DA

Anon who started the thread saying she couldn't get it legally is in the US. Region free players are legal in the US.

Fair enough, point conceded. Only this particular point in this particular case with that particular US anon, that is.

Re: Very unpopular opinion

It is not illegal to sell or own a region free player in Europe or IIRC Australia. All of the big companies make them.

Re: Very unpopular opinion

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, for fuck's sake. A region free DVD player is as cheap as a region-coded one, many PCs have region-free DVD players built-in, it's incredibly easy to order to order internationally from the UK via amazon.co.uk, and Blu Rays are region free.

So you're the idiot, and not wanting to buy a cheap, readily available piece of equipment or order from an international website doesn't make that content impossible to get legally. It doesn't even make it hard to get. I do it all the fucking time.

Re: Very unpopular opinion

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
It might be a cheap and readily available DVD layer, but it's not as legal as you think, just so you know: it's still illegal, it breaks region codes, that's why it's cheaper than region specific DVD players.

So yeah, people who download stuff or have a region-free DVD player are both doing something illegal. Just so you know.

Re: Very unpopular opinion

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
No, region-free players are entirely legal in my country and OP's.

(And it doesn't "break" any codes. The unit itself is simply uncoded so it doesn't reject discs based on their coding. It does nothing to the coding on the actual disc or alter its contents/protections. I won't dispute that they're illegal in some countries because I don't know the laws of every country, but they are absolutely, indisputably legal in many countries.)

Re: Very unpopular opinion

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
As dowloading is indisputably legal in other countries. You don't get it, do you? You're from the US, you can get DVDs and play them legally on your region-free DVD player, good for you. I'm in Europe, in a country where it's illegal to download and buy region-free DVD players. Not everything about SOPA and PIPA is about the US, it's affecting people outside the US too, all over the world in fact. And it. is. not. just. about. piracy.

Re: Very unpopular opinion

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, you're wrong about almost everything in this comment. Region free players are legal in the EU, and the EU even looked into whether region coding was illegal under EU conventions. They certain did not require it or enforce coding via law. Region coding exists because of corporate licensing agreements and corporate protectionism, not law, and region free players are and always have been legal hardware. I can't even find a record of this supposed place where corporate trade agreement region coding has been codified into national law.

You're also entirely missing the point that the comment was made by an American, and the response was directed at that American. And SOPA and PIPA have absolutely nothing to do with this.

Since it is virtually impossible to get a credit card here, I can't actually buy the DVD even though I really want to.

na

There's a lot of ignorance being displayed in this thread about how all of this works in different countries, what's available, what's legal, what's affordable (not by you, AIRT, others). US and UK anons saying "If you can't afford it or get your hands on it legally, you don't deserve to have it!" are ignorant capitalist assholes (yes, even the UK anons). The internet is a game changer and companies who think things will always be done the way they have been in the past are flailing away in their death throes and trying to take everyone else down with them. Sucks to be them, but they're trying to make it suck to be us. Change or die, parasitic mega-billion-earning companies. Change or die.

Okay, fine, I'm a total idiot, but can someone explain this to me?

"Please note that this product will not play on US spec 60i Blu-ray players as the Blu-ray discs are authored to UK 50i specs."

(that's from the box set)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sherlock-Box-Blu-ray-Region-Free/dp/B006K1IIHA

Does this mean it won't play on a 60hz tv?

Anyone?

Re: Very unpopular opinion

(Anonymous) 2012-01-25 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Check your TV's capabilities. Many TVs are capable of playing at both 50hz and 60hz - it might just be a case of changing the rate on the TV.

The Blu-ray settings I'm a bit fuzzier on, because I've only had BR player for a few months and I'm not clued in on all the hardware specs. It might be best to contact the manufacturer/s and ask them directly.
