Why do individual Americans always think people saying they hate America is directed at them. It's not. It's directed at your Government or your perceived national attitudes or your foreign policy. The people are not the country. The country is a political division, nothing more.

The people are not the country? That's like saying Germany isn't Germans. Countries are about people. Political divisions are about people.

No, they aren't. Countries are arbitrary political divisions which change over time. Germany is an obvious example of this, as is Italy. While I was born in England and so am English, I am not England and there are occasions when I don't support what the country of England does.

As a German I can say with certainty that only a very small number of people would get their panties in a twist about people saying they hate Germany. I'd want to know what the government had done, but the very idea that it was the same thing as "I hate you Germans." wouldn't cross my mind. Most German people can't be bothered with the amount of patriotism a US citizen seems to muster effortlessly.
