GUIDELINES

Anon posting is not required, but most definitely allowed. If you think you recognise an anon, keep it to yourself and don’t out them. IP tracking is off, and will remain that way.

Multiple fills are encouraged, and all kinds of fills are accepted! Fic, art, vids, cosplay, interpretive dance — whatever. Go wild! :D

Don’t reprompt until TWO parts after the last posting of the prompt.

RPF (real person fic, i.e. fic involving the actors themselves) is not supported at this meme.

Concrit is welcome, but kinkshaming, hijacking, and flaming are not tolerated.

Animism concerns generally 'inanimate' objects. While that generally means natural ones, it certainly doesn't have to. The violin definitely consists of several components occurring in nature, and added together and worked with human hands, you get her sum. (Oh that sounds beautiful to me).

As for the religious context, animism is found in many religions and forms of spirituality. I think Sherlock is probably not part of an organised or common religion, but may be spiritual in other ways, perhaps using a framework from other religions. Animism can be seen in Shinto, Hinduism, Buddhism, neopaganism, and even Mystic Judaism.

I found it rather difficult to find comprehensive sources, but this is a decent one: norse-mythology(dot)org/concepts/animism/

Authoranon here.... is their relationship sexual (as in genitalia and orgasms), sensual (as in skin contact and genitals possibly, but only in terms of all parts of the body being equal) or romantic (as in emotional without physical)?

Their relationship is primarily romantic. As for sensual -- insofar as touching and playing the violin, yes.

If you want, you can make it be sexual as well, though I'd prefer Sherlock's genitalia not actually make contact with the violin. (Not sure how to explain that . . . if you need me to explain how it's still sex and not masturbation, I'll try.)

I kind of have an idea that sometimes, when he plays the violin, it's like he's making love to it through the music. And if you want, that can mean that he does get turned on by the experience.

That was what I had in mind. And don't worry...I understand how it is not masturbation. It is more sensual/romantic than sexual, then. Do you prefer using the term "beloved"? Also..does he have animistic bouts of insight with other objects ( but no romantic relationship with them)? Or does only his beloved "speak" to him ( I get that there is no voice per se). Thank you for posting this prompt. I am learning a lot and enjoying writing it. So far, I have small scenes in chunks so it is not yet publishable, but it is underway.

I have no preference with the word 'beloved.' It doesn't really matter to me if you use it or not, it just worked best when I was posting the prompt.

I think he probably senses the objects in the same way, but not on the same intimate level, yes. So it's not nearly as deep, but he does 'feel' them.

I'm sorry to be asking so much, but I do sense the importance here to be more understood and I want to be sensitive to it. I am thinking he would want to/need to/find it difficult *not to* use this in The Work if he has this connection to things that others consider inanimate. Can I use that a bit in a case, or does it seem to be supernatural to you if I did? Not trying to make it like a superpower or anything, but it might lead him to examine things from a different perspective and John would be fascinated. I'm not sure on this, because I don't want to cheapen the connection, because it's not exactly a clear voice to him if he is not connected to the object thoroughly, but maybe a sense of something? Not talking Dr Doolittle here. And I'm not sure if I can pull it off... But I don't know if that is intriguing or offensive and if it is the later, I apologise. If not, maybe to address how he struggles to ignore this to be more objective in his investigations?

That sounds fine! Especially the whole being able to examine things from a different perspective thing. That actually sounds great.

It hadn't taken them long to find Moriarty's advert. It was in the Lost Items section, just as Sherlock had said it would be. Something about the wording was off, but John couldn't for the life of him figure out how, though he had been staring at it for a good part of the past hour, rereading the short passage. He looked up, surprised to find the detective not in his standard thinking pose, but pacing around the room. He hadn't seen him this agitated since he tore apart the flat searching for cigarettes, just before Henry Knight broke the tension with a case and they headed off to the Moor. Sherlock abruptly stopped and collapsed fiercely onto his chair, bringing his fingers up to their usual position for just a moment before sliding his head down, catching his index fingers in the corners of his eye sockets alongside his nose, his thumbs wedged beneath his chin. His eyes were squeezed shut. It looked as if he was breathing into his cupped palms.

Jim Moriarty had broken in once before, leaving video surveillance equipment on the bookshelf and a eerie video on John's blog, but he hadn't touched anything then. Certainly hadn't taken anything.

"So, do we wait on a ransom note? Get the coordinates and go on a covert rescue mission with full backup? Storm the premises and the damsel in distress." John grinned. Sherlock resumed his pacing. The grin faded to a look of genuine concern.

"I know, I know, it helps you think. Well, you will just have to think without it for now. Till you can get it back, that is. We will, you know. Get it back." After more silence than John was comfortable with he continued. "Not having it won't stop you from thinking. You didn't have your violin with you when you were in Baskerville, or come to think of it, in Tibet, or in Serbia. And you managed to continue to strategise and dismantle Moriarty's web."

"He was safe, John! When I was away, he was here and he was safe!" Sherlock froze before recovering his composure and storming past John, through the kitchen, to his room.

John followed.

Genderising a musical instrument wasn't, that weird. People genderized things all the time...cars, for example. His dad would always say the ole girl needed something or another. But this, this was...different. And not just that the gender was "wrong" since nearly every time someone referred to a musical instrument, it was as a female. He spoke to a closed door.

"Sherlock? I'm sorry. Your music is obviously very important to your state of mind, and if you would like to purchase another violin, I'm sure that we could just...."

"I won't be needing another violin, thank you. I've had that one since I was a child."

"Well, all the more reason to get a brand new one, eh?"

His attempt at humour was met with stony silence.

"I'm just kidding, you know. I am well aware of the fact that older instruments often have better craftsmanship, sound, value..I just was a bit surprised by the..."

Sherlock reappeared in the doorway. "By the sentiment, you mean."

"Yes."

"Did it not occur to you that having a burglar in our home might be distressing?"

"Well, just saying, he's been in here before, and your reaction was less...severe. He's got your violin. It appears he hasn't taken anything else. We will just contact this Italian lady whose working as a front for him and get it back."

Sherlock sighed. "There is no Italian lady, John. It's a message."

"The name?"

"Read it again. Just the name."

John looked back at the notice. "Galatea Polendina."

"Pygmalion. He was...not interested in women, but fell in love with the statue he created. The statue Galatea. Polendina was the nickname townspeople used to mock Geppeto in 'Pinocchio'."

"More fairytales."

Sherlock was about to speak when a text alert chimed. "Lestrade has a case."

"Great! Just the thing to get your mind off of this while they continue to track down the person who payed for the advert. Too bad your violin doesn't have a GPS-enabled phone."

Sherlock managed to make his lips curve upwards at the corners of his mouth. He counted himself fortunate John was already off looking for his coat and wasn't paying too close attention. A crime scene... he should be heading out, bounding with enthusiasm. That's what I'll do then. I would normally want to do this. It's just... a missing thing."You're right, John. I'm sure it will be recovered in good time if we leave them to their tracking." Forgive me .

Ahhhhhhhhh.
I've been lurking for ages waiting for this fic to happen and now it's here and the start is so good I can't even express how excited I am for the rest of it. I might cry at Sherlock's distress or if anything happens to the violin but I shall be at the edge of my seat any way.
Long story short, I adore what you have so far and cannot wait for more.
