Prompting Part XXXIV

GUIDELINES

  • Anon posting is not required, but most definitely allowed. If you think you recognise an anon, keep it to yourself and don’t out them. IP tracking is off, and will remain that way.

  • Multiple fills are encouraged, and all kinds of fills are accepted! Fic, art, vids, cosplay, interpretive dance — whatever. Go wild! :D

  • Don’t reprompt until TWO parts after the last posting of the prompt.

  • RPF (real person fic, i.e. fic involving the actors themselves) is not supported at this meme.

  • Concrit is welcome, but kinkshaming, hijacking, and flaming are not tolerated.

THE FILLED PROMPTS POST
When you fill a prompt, please use the appropriate Filled Prompts Post to archive your fill (there are instructions on the actual post).

If the part you wanted isn't up yet, just wait and one of the archivists will get to it, but please, once it is up, make sure you post your fills there according to the guidelines. DO NOT skip out on doing this because it seems like too much effort. If you want your fill to make it to the Delicious archive, that’s the way to do it.

Do not be afraid to ask questions about how it works if you are confused! The mods will be happy to explain.

WARNINGS/OFFENSIVE WORDING IN PROMPTS
Please consider warning for prompts that may trigger people (and also for fills, because some people read in flat view) and phrasing prompts in a manner that strives to be respectful.

Things which you might want to consider warning for include: Rape/Non-Con, Death, Suicidal Thoughts, Self-Harm, Underage Relationships, among others.

That being said, this is a kink meme. As such, there will be prompts that could offend you in a number of different ways. Not every prompt will have a trigger warning, and not every prompt will rub you the right way. If you have an issue with a specific prompt, feel free to bring it up in a discussion that takes place off the meme. However, flaming will not be tolerated regardless of origin.

You are highly encouraged to scroll past any prompt that you dislike.

Remember: be civil, be friendly, but don’t be shy!

THINGS THAT MAKE BROWSING THE MEME EASIER FOR EVERYONE
Please nest your fills. Doing so will make it easier for archivists to save your fills to the Delicious archive. Using subject lines will also help people reading the meme in flatview keep track of what’s happening. Finally, titling your fills (even if it’s something silly) will be helpful to those tracking a lot of prompts or scrolling through the meme.

PROMPT FREEZES
Depending on the rate of activity, there may or may not be a prompt freeze when a part reaches 2000 and 4500 comments. However, there will be one when it reaches 7000. After the 7000 comments freeze, a new part will be posted, and all prompting should happen on the new part.

TRIGGER WARNING: SUICIDE IDEATION

Part 11: Lies and Silence

John and Sherlock tiptoed around each other for the next few days. John apologized profusely for his actions. In penance, he took one of the pills the doctor gave him and attempted to tidy the flat. He didn’t make much progress before the opiate- induced stupor won out and he spent the afternoon in his chair, staring vacantly at the telly.

The darkness in the back of his mind was more active now. It was shaped like the hole in his memory. Occasionally it shifted, showing John fragments of things he couldn’t understand then swept them away. He was now constantly aware of its presence. He was afraid to sleep. All of his dreams were nightmares that he forgot as soon as he woke up. Even when he was awake, he couldn’t relax. He could feel it lurking, waiting for something to trigger it so that it could pounce.

For his part, Sherlock was solicitous and thoughtful, which only served to drive John up the wall with equal parts exasperation and guilt. His frustration was only made worse when his flatmate pointedly did not ask him any questions.

John could feel their friendship disintegrating into silence, but he didn’t know how to stop it. Sherlock wouldn’t be happy with an answer of ‘I don’t know,’ and if he knew how fragile John was, he would blame himself.

His greatest worry was that Sherlock would suspect some of the things that were going through John’s mind. He feared that his friend’s perceptive gaze would see that John had almost left a bullet chambered when he cleaned his gun last night. He wouldn’t kill himself in his bedroom. That was one horror he could spare his flatmate. He would go somewhere far away and die anonymously, a John Doe. Sherlock would find him eventually, but hopefully not until he was already in the ground. He was afraid to talk to Sherlock. He feared his voice would give away his intentions. He couldn’t tell him how deeply he cared for him, but he could show him.

A brush of fingers across the back of the hand to get his attention, a caress of his lips with his thumb before he kissed him, a finger hooked through a belt loop to pull his hips closer. This was John’s new language. Every time his hands spoke, Sherlock’s body melted against him, but his eyes were solemn, assessing. John could tell that his flatmate was making dozens of deductions every time they interacted, but for the first time, he was keeping them to himself.

*

The morning after their altercation did not yield much in the way of useful information, Sherlock mused. Whatever had happened, John was not willing to talk about it. He considered confronting him, but ultimately decided it to be a fruitless endeavor. There was something resolute in John’s long silences, something that Sherlock could not gather the courage to challenge.

He decided that he would not be able to figure out what was wrong with John by talking to him. Conversation was an inefficient means of communication in any case. Instead, Sherlock would have to fall back on his powers of observation.

Some of John’s body language was easy to read. For example, the way he flinched every time he saw the bruises on Sherlock’s neck. He obviously felt ashamed, which was not surprising. Also, the way he avoided Sherlock’s eyes. He was hiding something. Again, not a surprise.

Some things were more difficult to read, like the worried look he gave him when he thought Sherlock wasn’t watching. Or how Sherlock caught him early one morning, staring into his mug of tea with an expression on his face that could only be described as anguish.

Sherlock opened the bin and counted the tea bags. “You didn’t sleep last night.”

John waved a dismissive hand, “Bad dreams. Happens from time to time.”

Sherlock sat across from him at the table, “Not usually this often.”

John stared into the distance over Sherlock’s shoulder, “No, not usually.”

Sherlock wanted to ask, ‘What’s wrong. Please tell me. I don’t care what it is, I know I’m not good at this sort of thing, but I’ll try to understand.’ He kept silent. He could tell from the grim line of John’s lips that any answer he gave would be a lie.

John reached out and absently lay his hand over Sherlock’s as if in apology for not answering the question that his flatmate never asked.

Thank you! The magical sex cure trope is one of my least favorites. I'm happy to hear that I've managed to avoid it so far!
