Rant Post

Previous (Full) Rant Post

No real directions, but this isn't a place for debate. It's a place for RANTIN' AND RAVIN'.

There is a rule: There is to be no calling out anyone by name in Rants, Chatter, or on the Meme itself. This only produces an atmosphere of animosity and it is no longer tolerated. If you see any names being ranted about, please link us at Page-A-Mod. Thanks! :)

Please do not use this post or any other posts in the meme for sharing of download or streaming of links that aren't the official source of the content.

Anon posting is most definitely allowed, but not required.

Shark Week sucks.

Omegaverse is stupid + generic kink-shaming comments.

Mystrade doesn't makes sense, they're old, lolz.

MorMor is Swedish for grandmother and half the people on the meme speak Swedish now and are bothered by this association.

JohnLock, omg no, lolz.

Baby Aye-Ayes are coming for your soul.

People who like noncon are rapists.

Everyone needs to go back to Tumblr.

(What have I missed?)

WHY? WHY?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-07 12:00 pm (UTC)(link)
So I'm just sitting there, doodling portraits of my professors when my friend leans over and goes.

"That doesn't look like her. Why doesn't it look like her?"

AND FOR SOME REASON.

ALL THE RAGE IN ME. ALL THE RAEEEEG.

For one thing, if it doesn't look like her, how the fuck did you know it was her anyway?

The second thing, how the fuck do you expect me to doodle up a realistic portrait of my professor within 5 minutes, in bad lighting while simultaneously trying to keep up with what she's teaching?

The worst thing about is when my friends start trying to go into detail.

"Maybe you should change the eyes. The cheeks look kinda weird. The nose looks weird. Something is wrong with the hair."

CHANGE HOW?!

WEIRD HOW?!

WRONG HOW?!

NOT TO MENTION, I"M DOODLING WITH A PEN. A PEN. HOW CHANGE? HOW CHANGE NOW?

I just want to snap something like "If I fucking knew why it didn't look like her, you wouldn't be asking that fucking question."

Over-reacting anon is overreacting.

I blame PMS.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-07 12:01 pm (UTC)(link)

Why did the last rant post end before I could talk to the person who decided that Padlock was Sirius/Sherlock?

I loved that idea, whoever you are. I now want John and Sherlock to get 'Gladstone' but have it actually be Sirius in animagus form.

Why so awesome?

Because we're just that awesome, I guess.

I'm here now, though. Gladstone=Sirius is a fantastic idea. I want to write it now. All of it.

Yeah I was going to suggest looking at Tripadvisor or couch surfing.

WIP galore wasting time GRRRRR!

(Anonymous) 2012-03-07 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Enough already with all the WIP chapter posting in every Sherlock community. Most of the fans watch all the same communities, so if you post a snippet in 4 separate communities, a very large number of fans will get to see it 4 times right in a row - wasting time and bandwidth!

If you are posting one chapter at a time to get help from the readers, well I don't want to be anyone's extra beta reader! Especially when I can't tell where the story is going because it's been 2 weeks since the last chapter.

If your story needs beta work - or if you haven't even figured out what the story is going to be, PLEASE find your own beta reader(s). Once you've discussed and reviewed and rewritten in into a final form, THEN post the story.

I don't want to read a miniscule portion of a story that may never be finished. If your story is posted in chapters (sometimes more than 20 chapters) save them up and post it all together. Or make sure there is a master post that leads to ALL the chapters.

Yes, Happy Dance for you if you've written some more Sherlock - But I'd much rather write a complimentary comment for a completed story than page on by your work and ignore what might have been a great story - if it ever got past WIP!!!!!

Re: WIP galore wasting time GRRRRR!

(Anonymous) 2012-03-07 12:40 pm (UTC)(link)
So much word to the overposting nonsense. Sometimes I see stuff on my friends list and I'm all wtf didn't I already read that? and then I click on it and boom! yeah, I did, and it was good, okay, but now you made me click twice and that's dumb.

I get that people want to gain readers, but like, pick a busy comm and just post there. If your stuff is good, it'll get around anyway.

I love anon commenting by the way, it frees me from the need to capitalise and shit (and it's the only time I use vulgarities, buggery fuck because otherwise some peeps who know me might be disillusioned).

But my actual rant is that super anal detail oriented people are reeeeeally getting me down. To the point that I don't even want to open their emails when I see one(*ten) sitting in my inbox, only I know I have to because they are paying me to proofread their crappy pyramid scheme website and make it look perfect so they can sucker more people out of their money who think they are serious because their web site is so shiny and perfect.

And who the fuck cares whether everything is capitalised the same on all 130 pages on the site? No one is going to like go through and compare. It's good the way it is. Deal.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-07 12:46 pm (UTC)(link)
As a proof reader for a demanding client I really feel your pain.

'Why have you constructed this sentence differently this time from how you constructed it before? Which is correct?'

'Why have you used this word here and this other word there? They are the same thing. Which is correct?'

It's all correct, there's more than one way of saying everything in English.

And my personal favourite: 'are you sure this means insert phrase here?' When what they're asking about is that phrase. Verbatim.

Aaargh!

Warning: mild annoyance ahead

(Anonymous) 2012-03-07 12:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Can people please find another term rather than huff?

EG: "He huffed out a laugh." Or a breath.

What is someone doing when they're huffing? They are sighing, or letting out a sharp breath, or something, or anything! Just please change the huff record.

And while I'm here FOR THE LOVE OF GOD STOP USING 'ANYWAYS'

Many thanks.

Re: Warning: mild annoyance ahead

(Anonymous) 2012-03-07 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
He sighed out a laugh.

He let out a laugh. He... laughed out a sharp breath? Laughed shortly?

Barked out a laugh. But that's completely different.

No sorry, the huffing stays. Many Thanks.

SPELLING MISTAKE

(Anonymous) 2012-03-07 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Costs me half an hour and a whole lot of confusion.

After searching for a long time on Google and trying to puzzle out what the hell was a bonding associate in chemistry, I realised something:

The sentence should be this:
Discuss the bonding associated with a hydrate.
Which means, I should discuss the type of bonding found in a hydrate.

Not:
Discuss the bonding associate with a hydrate.
Which means, I need to find out what on earth is a 'bonding associate' and describe it to a hydrate.

Re: SPELLING MISTAKE

(Anonymous) 2012-03-07 01:16 pm (UTC)(link)
That's why I prefer German in sciences. English is great for puns and innuendos, but when you want to just say one thing and only that thing (and, you know, not say something completely different by leaving off one single letter), it's so aggravating.

Did you? Sorry to hear that.

Fine to use it if you're writing a character who would use that dialect, but no one in Sherlock would say 'anyways'.

An equivalent wrongness would be me making Sherlock say 'ey up'.

I do not know how to be single

(Anonymous) 2012-03-07 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I just don't know how to interact with people anymore. Being half of a couple had somehow become part of my identity, and I'm painfully aware of the fact that that's changed (for the better). I was off the market since I was 19 years old, and now I'm 25 and back on it, but it seems the market changed while I was away.

When are people flirting with me? When should I flirt back? What's the appropriate number of dates to go on before you can kiss them? Before you can sleep with them?

Where do you even go on a first date as an adult?? What's an appropriate amount to spend on a first date? Who does the paying? If somebody asks you on a date and you don't want to date them, how do you politely refuse?

I feel fucking stupid, honestly, this is just a part of human socialization that I seem to have missed out on.

There isn't a right answer to most of those questions. Rules like that are kind of important in teenage dating, but when you're in your twenties, it's mostly just 'do what feels right to you'.

And when someone asks you on a date... if there's nothing speaking against them, I'd say give them a chance and go on that date. A first date doesn't have to go anywhere and maybe they'll surprise you. If there is a reason you don't want to date them, try to wrap it in the nicest possible way and tell them.

It's 10 pm and I haven't had dinner

(Anonymous) 2012-03-07 01:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm considering whether I should go to the bother of making instant noodles or make with the crackers again? But I'm kinda running outta crackers and there's nothing else left for breakfast if I eat the crackers. :S Or maybe just skip dinner like I have for the last few months.

IDK why I love food, love eating, but totally can't be arsed to actually cook myself, even instant noodles. I could probably happily not eat for 3 days in a row assuming I had other stuff to distract me. WTF, self?

can anyone tell me why I am watching Downton Abbey? Why? Why? Why?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-07 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Because it's popular and you wanted to check out what the hype was all about?

I hate captchas.

Eyesight isn't perfect so the messed up visuals of some of the words are really difficult to read and crap hearing means the audios are even worse. Getting fed up of the 'get it on your third attempt' thing.

Disappointing Sequels

(Anonymous) 2012-03-07 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
i really liked the first story in your series. But your second one not so much. I think I'm now only realizing how out of character your Sherlock and John are, and I have to read things over again because you make them sound like bumbling idiots who repeat themselves four times in the same damn sentence. You can make them sound awkward without having your writing be awkward.

Genuine question: what constitues "awkward writing" to you as opposed to characters sounding awkward because they need to be awkward for a scene?
