IMO, it's hot because Sherlock usually the one in control. Reversal of power roles is sexy.

Also, top!John is usually a calm and caring man. Kindness is both sexy and emotionally fulfilling.

See, now, normally I am ALL ABOUT the reversal of power roles in my slash, but I really do prefer top!Sherlock (or switching - switching is good, too, as long as it's not hugely contrived and wasn't obviously just thrown in to satisfy certain readers.) I'm still trying to figure this one out, but probably it's just because I've always been primarily a Sherlock fangirl, more than anything else.
