A lot hurt about this scene. But this was painful, because Sherlock still has moments where despite his intelligence, he can't deal with a failure at such a human level, so to speak. Fear. But also the fact that it reminded him of being called freak and weirdo, and all sorts of names, and despite the fact that fear is such a natural human emotion, Sherlock sees it as a failure. And hates that he can't control himself in front of John. Which is why he lashes out and hurts John and John (surprisingly, unsurprisingly?) reacts by walking away.
