University AU, Sherlock and John met in high school and became very close friends ever since. When they go to university, they meet a very interesting man called Jim. They all become good friends until one day Jim tells Sherlock he is in love with him. John doesn't approve at first because he is feeling like a third wheel, but changes his mind when he sees how much Jim makes Sherlock happy. After graduating, Jim leaves the country for any reason leaving Sherlock heartbroken and John to pick up the peaces. Life goes on and Sherlock becomes a consulting detective and John a doctor. They don't hear anything about Jim for 10 years. When Jim comes back, he is known to the world as "The Consulting Criminal."

Bonus points:

-angst in both sides. Sherlock is fighting all the emotions inside of him after seeing Jim again. And Jim is hurting for seeing Sherlock so vulnerable, but they still play the game.
-John being a BAMF.
-Mycroft gets involved in any way to help his little brother.
