Ever since Sherlock's 'return from the dead', John has never been quite the same with Sherlock. Sure it looks like they are still BFFs but Sherlock knows different. John does not fully trust him any more and as much as Sherlock wants to deny it, that hurts.
Sherlock has tried in his own way to make amends, including pushing his own feelings for John away so John and Mary can be happy, but the mistrust, and even a touch of resentment lingers. So Sherlock slowly, carefully stops trying to be so 'Sherlock-y', but even so, he still seems to annoy people.
When Sherlock meets Magnussen, a man he despises more than even Moriarty, Magnussen is able to exploit a rarely found weakness in Sherlock. He blackmails Sherlock into regular sex sessions (usually at Appledore) in order to leave John alone - and not expose Mary's past, because John deserves happiness. Sherlock tries to convince himself it is worth it, that sex doesn't bother him, that Magnussen's touch, and worse, his kisses doesn't repulse and terrify him, and it really doesn't matter that Sherlock has lost his virginity Magnussen, and Sherlock can endure the pain of Magnussen's touch.
But Sherlock should know no secret can be held forever, not when you have a brother who is the British Government, makes it his business to inform a certain former army doctor.
It turns out John takes a *very* different view to Sherlock over this blackmail...
