Sherlock knows homophobia exists but he doesn't really KNOW know

I think maybe in a case, the victims were beaten to death. That so much is clear and rarely Sherlock gets interested in the WHY. They aren't government officials (so terrorism/revenge/assassination is ruled out) not overly religious or not at all religious (again, terrorism, hate etc), they were both White and fell in the majority of where they lived and work (so unlikely to be racially related), they were high school sweethearts and have not separated since getting together (so obviously not a jealous ex lover), they were both working low profile jobs (unlikely killed for revenge because of something they did at work), friends and family interview all stated the same things about their personality, maybe they were killed because they were too nice. So Sherlock wants to know why they were attacked so seemingly randomly and murdered. So why the fuck? THERE WAS NO POINT.

Lestrade explains carefully to him that they were attacked and killed not at entirely at random. It was because someone saw them holding hands and didn't like it.

Sherlock is baffled. He doesn't think holding hands automatically mean you're gay. He held hands with Mycroft. He's most certainly not in an incestuous gay relationship with him. He held hands with John a few times before when John's or his own PTSD suddenly acted up. How can people jump to conclusions that holding hands mean they are gay? Lestrade is like, "it's just the probability" which Sherlock accepts but then he's like but how does that affect anyone else to the point where they actively attack and murder? Statistically and in theory, people should be lazier/can't be bothered when not emotionally charged by revenge especially if it's a complete stranger. It can't be only just because the murderer believed them to be gay.

So Sherlock decides he needs to experiment for himself. He goes around many neighbourhoods at various times holding hands with John (most of the time) and he amount of hate he receives in some areas over others is astounding. He also noted that their appearance and perceived compatibility by handsomeness/occupation also gave different results.

Then for shits and giggles, Sherlock gets into a relationship with a man (can be john) out of spite (he likes the boyfriend a lot, but Sherlock isnt a relationship person... Except if he is going to fall in love he can truly fall in love with this person and if it pisses an entire group of people too, then he will take more delight). Prior to this, Sherlock hasn't really thought about sexuality in terms of himself - if he likes someone obviously that persons mind is brilliant who the fuck cares what's between his legs, it's not like sex is going to take up 100% of their relationship.
