Soul mates are a real thing and people usually hold onto "wisps" of them. As in a person has 'visions' almost like faded memories or clips of their soulmate- their fingers across their favored instrument, a babies laughing eyes, the smell of their favorite perfume, that persons first illicit activity, sirens and anger...etc. Tiny things that give hints as to where their soul mates are and who they are. Nothing concrete or defining (and this would make it really interesting to see with someone like the Holmes ; them trying to solve it and scouting out places and such).People are supposed to use these hints (according to society) to find their soul mate. They won't know it's them (though they may get a feeling or they may match the "wisps" with a person) until a while after meeting that person and interacting with them. For most people it's a gradual realization , for others it can come out of no where (+5 If John's realization comes out of no where vs Sherlock's where he gradually figures it out). If a person misses their soul mate (like they meet but than depart) they sometimes realize it too.
However, sometimes people get their soulmate wrong. Other times (and this could be rare or not as rare as people are lead to believe) the images and such are a warning. Not a here they are but a stay away.

Sherlock, meanwhile , does the opposite for his own reason (he says to avoid them but in reality he is kinda lonely...) and keeps saying he's found them , goes maybe years thinking he is on to something, only for it to turn out that nope he's wrong again.
*Mycroft finds his soulmate first and their connection is so powerful he literally can't keep away.
*Seb and John...somehow in someway.
