John and Mary are already married when Sherlock comes back. The thing is, Mary is Moran and Sherlock tricks her into outing herself and her illegitimate baby in front of John. Mary is arrested. He also has Mycroft dissolve John's marriage for him, as Mary's ID isn't real and they might as well get it all done with right?
Then, when all that is finished, Sherlock turns to John and is like, let's go home to Baker St, aren't you happy I'm here to clean up after you and do what's best for you, why are you still upset about that, it wasn't real?
It's too much, and John just shuts down and goes back to his now-empty house, desperately trying to DEAL with everything. He won't talk to Sherlock, won't answer his texts. Sherlock is sad and confused, so eventually Molly or Mycroft or even Lestrade come over to harangue John for Sherlock's suffering.(after all he sacrificed and suffered for you/he misses you/ you're being cruel and selfish)
John finally snaps and rages at them with all of his pain and anger over the betrayals of two people he loved and trusted, his 3rd shattered life, his insecurities built up during his time with Sherlock, and his frustration with these people, who KNEW about Sherlock's plan, who didn't have to LIVE in a world where Sherlock was dead, who DARE to scold him over his feelings as if they don't matter. As if JOHN doesn't matter.
Sherlock somehow hears the tirade and (finally) realizes how much this has fucked John up.
Whether or not Sherlock and John reconcile is up to you, but DON'T make it easy. That is my one real requirement. I'm not discounting Sherlock's own suffering and PTSD, but not at the cost of John's pain either.
*I'm constantly frustrated with how John is treated in the show and in a lot of fics, and I might even fill this myself just to vent. I'm also open to other related fills if you can find them.
