Post SOT: John and Mary are on their honeymoon when they get an unexpected call from Mycroft: Sherlock went on a case alone, and was terribly injured by the suspect. When Sherlock sets foot inside 221b for the first time in months, he takes one look around the flat and turns to John and matter-of-factly says "I was in love with you."
John's mind sticks on that: "I was in love with you".
Sherlock follows with: "Don't worry John, those feelings are gone now."
(I only ask that Sherlock's feelings for John never return. He's refamiliarizing himself with John in an entirely new situation: John is married, they don't live together, and they don't spend nearly as much time together as they did before The Fall. I think in these circumstances, Sherlock wouldn't fall in love with John. Whether John is or ever was in love with Sherlock, and how John reacts is up to you.)
